A delegation from the Malta Developers Association (MDA) composed of 11 members, headed by MDA President Sandro Chetcuti, has just returned from Sicily, where it held meetings in Syracuse and Ragusa with the regional offices of the main Italian construction lobby, ANCE, and Confindustria.
The major outcome was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the ANCE Ragusa office, which puts the interests of Maltese entrepreneurs in the forefront, paving the way for Sicilian suppliers of goods and services to work more closely with Maltese investors and operators in the sector, safeguarding MDA members’ interests.
Mr Chetcuti commented: “We are laying the path to promote better networking opportunities with our Sicilian counterparts and, from here, we will continue to take these opportunities beyond Sicily to other neighbouring countries.”
There is still the need for due diligence to be performed between one country and another both when Maltese go to do business abroad and when the Sicilians come to do business in Malta.
There was great interest in the growth being achieved in Malta and the high rate of economic development, with one of the major hurdles faced by Italian companies being the high rate of corporate tax.
Accompanying the delegation were Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and the Property Market Chris Agius, Parliamentary Secretary Clifton Grima for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organisations and Planning Authority Chairman Johann Buttigieg.
The meetings attracted prominent coverage across the Sicilian media. Here is a selection:
