Parliamentary Secretary for Social Housing Roderick Galdes thanked the Malta Developers Association for its assistance in drawing up the White Paper on the Rental Market, in particular how a different type of building stock could be brought to the market through a public-private partnership.
Mr Galdes and members of the MDA Council, headed by its President Sandro Chetcuti, held a detailed discussion on property affordability, especially that of rental property, without having an impact on the private rental market.
The White Paper is also based on research which took into consideration the MDA study on the local property market commissioned from KPMG.
In his reply, Mr Chetcuti described the White Paper as ‘balanced and neutral’, attempting to establish stability in the rental market. The MDA is in favour of incentives for landlords who agree to commit to longer term rentals.
Mr Chetcuti also noted that there is a need to address the anomalies of pre-1995 rented properties. “It is time to offer justice to property owners who have been suffering for decades,” he said.
The MDA’s ultimate goal is for all sectors of the population to benefit from the wealth being generated in the country, thus maintaining the tradition of home ownership as a priority to the Maltese.
