Rather than creating a new strategy, the MDA believes Malta should continue building upon its existing long-term energy vision by maintaining sustained investment in electricity generation, distribution networks, renewable energy, battery storage, smart grid technologies and other critical infrastructure.
The MDA believes that the implementation of Malta’s long-term energy vision should continue to evolve through regular review, investment and collaboration between Government, Enemalta and the private sector, ensuring that infrastructure keeps pace with the country’s economic growth and future energy demands.
Key priorities should include:
* Continued strengthening and modernisation of the national electricity distribution network.
* Increased investment in substations, transformers, underground cable infrastructure and network redundancy.
* Greater deployment of battery energy storage systems.
* Stronger incentives to accelerate photovoltaic installations.
* Increased investment in smart grid technologies
* Better coordination between national infrastructure planning, utility investment and new development so that infrastructure investment goes hand in hand with Malta’s growth.
* Incentives that encourage the construction of more energy-efficient buildings while safeguarding housing affordability.
* Continued support for innovation in energy efficiency, energy storage and emerging technologies.
The MDA also believes that the implementation of this long-term vision would benefit from the establishment of a National Infrastructure and Energy Advisory Council to provide strategic advice, assess future electricity demand, identify long-term investment priorities and help ensure that Malta remains well prepared for future challenges.
