MDA Welcomes Strengthened Housing Schemes as Positive Step Towards Affordability
The Malta Development Association (MDA) welcomes the Government’s announcement of a strengthened package of housing measures aimed at supporting over 900 families and individuals, with an annual investment of €6.5 million. These revisions to existing schemes represent a constructive and timely intervention in addressing housing affordability challenges.
The MDA notes the updates to key schemes including the Housing Benefit Scheme, the Equity Sharing Scheme, and the “Nikru Biex Nassistu” initiative. The targeted expansion of eligibility criteria and increased financial support are particularly significant in assisting vulnerable groups such as young people and separated individuals. The revision of rental rates under the “Nikru Biex Nassistu” scheme is expected to encourage greater participation from property owners, potentially increasing the supply of social accommodation while ensuring stability for tenants. Similarly, the extension of the Housing Benefit Scheme to include persons aged 55 and over who are separated, alongside increased income thresholds and higher benefit caps, is a meaningful step towards addressing real life financial pressures faced by this demographic. The MDA also acknowledges the enhancements to the Equity Sharing Scheme, which will facilitate greater access to home ownership, particularly for younger individuals and those facing difficulties in securing traditional financing. These measures will have the effect of enabling more people to enter the property market in a sustainable manner.
The Association believes that measures like these make a real difference in people’s day to day lives. When designed well, they help ease the pressure many families and individuals are feeling, whether they are trying to rent or take their first step onto the property ladder. The MDA remains committed to engaging constructively with policymakers and stakeholders to support balanced, effective, and sustainable solutions within the housing sector.
