MDA welcomes economic surplus

The Malta Developers Association welcomes the news that after over three decades Malta’s Consolidated Fund is no longer in a permanent deficit situation, with Government revenue exceeding payments in 2016.

MDA recognises that this is an important milestone in Malta’s economic history and congratulates Government for reaching this objective without resorting to harsh austerity measures, while reducing taxation.

MDA would also like to point out that the construction and property industry has been one of the economic motors that led to this most satisfactory result and that Government’s pro-business attitude was also one of the reasons why this result was achieved.

Now that Malta has reached this target, Government should ensure that the economy remains buoyant to sustain a situation where annual deficits will be a thing of the past while keeping in mind the need for the country not to overspend and keep employment in the public sector within a manageable level.

L-MDA sodisfatta bis-surplus ekonomiku

Il-Malta Developers Association (MDA) bi pjaċir tilqa’ l-aħbar li, wara aktar minn tletin sena, il-Fond Konsolidat ta’ Malta m’għadux f’sitwazzjoni ta’ defiċit permanenti, peress li d-dħul tal-Gvern kien akbar mill-infiq fl-2016.

L-MDA tirrikonoxxi li dan kien pass importanti fl-istorja ekonomika ta’ Malta u tifraħ lill-Gvern talli laħaq dan il-għan mingħajr ma kellu jirrikorri għal miżuri ta’ awtorità ħarxa, filwaqt li naqqas it-taxxi.

L-MDA tixtieq tirrimarka wkoll li l-industrija tal-kostruzzjoni u l-proprjetà kienet waħda mill-muturi ekonomiċi li waslet għal dan ir-riżultat mill-aktar sodisfaċenti u li l-attitudni pro-business tal-Gvern kienet ukoll waħda mir-raġunijiet li wasslu għal dan ir-riżultat.

Issa li Malta laħqet din il-mira, il-Gvern għandu jiżgura li l-ekonomija tibqa’ sejra tajjeb biex tkun tista’ ssostni sitwazzjoni fejn defiċits annwali jkunu xi ħaġa tal-passat waqt li nżommu f’moħħna l-ħtieġa li l-pajjiż ma jonfoqx iż-żejjed u nżommu l-impjieg fis-settur pubbliku f’livelli maniġġabbli.
