MDA Council meets Planning Parliamentary Secretary

The Council of the Malta Developers Association met Parliamentary Secretary for Planning Deborah Schembri on 7 April at her offices in Castille.

MDA President Sandro Chetcuti said the Association believed in safeguarding the environment. Developers, he added, who abused of the regulations should suffer the consequences. The authorities should take harsher action to deter those breaking the law.

Developers, Mr Chetcuti continued, faced too much bureaucracy, which was discouraging development. What is stopping developers from getting what is theirs by right? Certain procedures in processing development applications were leading to loss of time and money, he complained.

Dr Schembri said Government is focusing on eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy. This, she pointed out, is a priority, adding that the Planning Authority had launched new structures, including a Users’ Committee, which would play a crucial role in getting together those who use the PA’s services.

The communications system is weak, she pointed out, stressing that she intends to work so that those effected by development procedures would face the fewest delays possible.
