MDA Council in first official meeting with Parliamentary Secretary Michael Falzon

The Council of the Malta Developers Association (MDA) today had its first official meeting with the new Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and Simplification of Administrative Processes, Dr Michael Falzon. The meeting, held at Castille, included the announcement of the results of a survey among MDA members. This is the text of MDA President Sandro Chetcuti’s address:

“The Malta Developers Association (MDA) is working and contributing in the most professional way with this administration where we had an excellent relationship with Dr Michael Farrugia and we have no doubt that this relationship will continue to grow with the Hon. Dr Michael Falzon.

“On the contrary to those who try to scare and take needlessly, the MDA never expected to have a monopoly of how policies are drawn up, but it believes that it can contribute in the best possible way so that the government that wants to be pro business and increase employment can deliver only if its members can get to work… and can be confident that they can overcome needless difficulties…!

“This year the MDA again and increased its membership by 10% and the association of Maltese wood manufacturers, the MFMO, affiliated with it. We feel that there is a lot that is yet to be done so that we can have sustainable planning, procedures that do not discourage investors and create a level playing field as much as possible.

“The MDA has made its proposals on hotels, the FAR (Floor Area Ratio), the SPED (Strategic Plan for Environment and Development), and even on the Local Plans, where we stated publicly that, although we feel that certain anomalies and/or injustices need to be addressed, in general we insist that no more development should take place on agricultural land outside development zones (ODZ)…

“The MDA is being proactive and taking part regularly in meetings of MEPA, the BICC, the BRO, the Housing  Authority and others so that we will truly see more projects and sustainable development in the country.

“We can achieve this only if we continue to strengthen our relations and credibility with the country’s politicians so that together with other associations of good will we can see Malta stronger economically.”

In his reply, Dr Falzon echoed Mr Chetcuti’s willingness to work at improving relations and thanked the MDA for its feedback on the various policies that are up for consultation. The country, he said, is walking a tightrope because of size limitations. He reaffirmed the administration’s pro business attitude and said that it was important that, at the end of the day, decisions take are understand and accepted in the spirit that they are in the national interest.

PRESS RELEASE

Il-Kunsill tal-MDA fl-ewwel laqgħa uffiċjali

mas-Segretarju Parlamentari Michael Falzon

Il-Kunsill tal-Malta Developers Association (MDA) illuym kellu l-ewwel laqgħa uffiċjali mas-Segretarju Parlamentari għall-Ippjanar u Simplifikazzjoni ta’ Proċessi Amministrattivi ġdid, Dr Michael Falzon. Fil-laqgħa, li saret Kastilja, tħabbru r-riżultati ta’ survey fost il-membri tal-MDA. Dan hu t-test tal-indifizz tal-President tal-MDA, Sandro Chetcuti:

“Il-Malta Developers Association (MDA) ħadmet u tagħti kontribut bl-aktar mod professjonali ma’ din l-amministrazzjoni fejn kellna relazzjoni mill-aqwa ma’ Dr Michael Farrugia u ma għandha l-ebda dubju li din ir-relazzjoni se tkompli tikber mal-Onorevoli Dr Michael Falzon…

“Bil-kontra ta’ min jipprova jbeżża u jparla fil-vojt, l-MDA qatt ma kienet tippretendi li jkollha xi monopolju ta’ kif isiru l-policies, imma temmen li tista’ tagħti kontribut mill-aqwa biex gvern li jkun pro business u li jrid iżid l-impjiegi ikun jista’ jwettaq biss jekk il-membri tagħna jkunu jistgħu jaħdmu… u jħossuhom kunfidenti li jegħlbu diffikultajiet bla bżonn…!

“Din is-sena l-MDA reġgħet żiedet is-sapport fil-membri b’10 fil-mija u affiljaw magħha assoċjazzjoni tal-mastrudaxxi Maltin l-MFMO! Aħna inħossu li fadal ħafna xi jsir sabiex naslu biex ikollna pjanar sostenibbli, proċeduri li ma jaqtawx qalb l-investituri u noħolqu kemm jista’ jkun level playing field!

“L-MDA  għamlet il-proposti tagħha fuq il-lukandi, fuq il-FAR, l-iSPED, u saħansitra fuq il-Pjanijiet Lokali fejn ħriġna pubblikament ngħidu li għalkemm inħossu li għandhom jiġu ndirizzati ċertu anomaliji u/jew xi inġustizzji, b’mod ġenerali nisħqu li m’għandniex inżidu aktar art fabbrikabbli barra miż-żona tal-bini (ODZ)…

“L-MDA qed tkun proattiva u tipparteċipa f’laqgħat regolari mal-MEPA, il-BICC, il-BRO, il-Housing Authority u xi oħrajn sabiex f’pajjiżna tabilħaqq naraw aktar proġetti u żvilupp sostenibbli!

“Dan nistgħu nwettquh biss jekk inkomplu nsaħħu r-relazzjoni u l-kredibilità mal-politiċi f’pajjizna sabiex flimkien ma’ għaqdiet ta’ rieda tajba inkunu nistgħu naraw Malta ekonomikament b’saħħitha…”

Fir-risposta tiegħu, Dr Falzon qabel mas-Sur Chetcuti u wera x-xewqa li jaħdem biex itejjeb ir-relazzjonijiet mal-għaqda u rringrazzja lill-MDA għall-kontribut li qed tagħti fid-diskussjonijiet fuq il-policies li qegħdin għall-konsultazzjoni pubblika. Qal li l-pajjiż qed jimxi fuq tightrope minħabba l-limitazzjonijiet ta’ daqs. Reġa tenna kif l-amministrazzjoni hija pro business u qal li hu importanti i, fl-aħħar mill-aħħar id-deċiżjonijiet li jiettieħdu jiġu mifhuma u aċċettati fl-ispirtu li huma fl-interess nazzjonali.
