MDA celebrates 5th anniversary

The 55 founder members of the Malta Developers Association were given a memento in appreciation of their contribution in the setting up of the association, which celebrated its fifth anniversary on Saturday with a reception at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, Floriana. Among the guests were Cabinet Ministers, MPs from both sides of the House, sponsors, partners and the media.

MDA President Sandro Chetcuti paid tribute to the vision and commitment of “18 entrepreneurs” who originally gathered at his house in 2010 and drew up a statute that enabled the dream of a representative body for the construction industry to become a reality.

The fledgling association, which at first was not taken so seriously, was officially launched on 16 September, 2010, at Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa, thanks to Mr Benny Camilleri and Mr Charles Polidano. The MDA’s first President, Perit Michael Falzon, was described by Mr Chetcuti as the “association’s compass, who set us on our direction and controlled my unbounded enthusiasm”.

The economic climate back in 2010 was far from rosy. “Let us not forget what a precarious situation our industry was in,” Mr Chetcuti said. “The world was in the depths of the financial crisis and we were being told to diversify because the construction industry and the property market were saturated and there was no room for further progress. But we were not discouraged.

“We decided that we were on a ship that was in the middle of that storm. The original 55 founder members of this association united, and continue to lend their support to this day, and we sensibly managed to bring it into port.”

After that rocky voyage with all the trouble that was faced, the situation today has changed completely. “Make hay while the sun shines,” he affirmed because “there is once again a boom in the property industry for whoever is working properly, developing sustainably and for whoever follows the rules and directives that are being imposed on us by the European Union.”

Yet Mr Chetcuti also had a word of warning: “Don’t take things for granted. Let us continue to keep our feet on the ground. Damage is repaired slowly and it can be suffered very quickly. Our association today enjoys the respect of both the main large political parties in the country that are instrumental in delivering the policy that directs the economy ahead. If our industry slows down, everything follows.”

The MDA President concluded with an appeal to the young members of the association – which now numbers over 300 members – to come forward and give their contribution to support the committee. He hinted that the time had come for him to make way for others: “I feel we have arrived and grown, and I feel that the time will soon come when I take a back seat.

“It is a marvellous thing when you are giving a contribution on a national scale. We have learned how to lobby and negotiate with the government. Without being partisan, I must admit that this administration understood clearly the need and the importance of the building industry.

“Sometimes we agreed, sometimes we disagreed, but many of the MDA’s proposals were taken on board in Budget after Budget, so that today thankfully business is healthy and we believe that in the next five years it is going to continue to be positive,” Mr Chetcuti concluded.

L-MDA tiċċelebra l-5 anniversarju

Il-55 membru fundatur tal-Malta Developers Association (MDA) ingħataw tifkira bħala apprezzament għall-kontribut tagħhom fit-twaqqif tal-assoċjazzjoni, li ċċelebrat il-ħames anniversarju tagħha b’riċeviment li sar fil-Lukanda Excelsior, il-Furjana, nhar is-Sibt li għadda. Fost il-mistiedna kien hemm Ministri, Membri Parlamentari miż-żewġ naħat tal-Kamra, sponsers, imsieħba u l-media.

Il-President tal MDA Sandro Chetcuti ta ġieħ lill-viżjoni u l-impenn tat-“18-il imprenditur” li oriġinarjament iltaqgħu fid-dar tiegħu fl-2010 u fasslu statut li permezz tagħha l-ħolma ta’ korp li jirrappreżenta l-industrija tal-kostruzzjoni setgħet issir realtà.

Din l-assoċjazzjoni żagħżugħa, li fil-bidu ma tantx ittieħdet bis-serjetà, kienet ġiet inawgurata uffiċjalment fis-16 ta’ Settembru, 2010, fil-Lukanda Le Méridien San Ġiljan, grazzi għas-Sur Benny Camilleri u għas-Sur Charles Polidano. L-ewwel President tal-MDA, il-Perit Michael Falzon, ġie deskritt mis-Sur Chetcuti bħala l-“boxxla tal-assoċjazzjoni, li tagħna d-direzzjoni u ikkontrolla l-entużjażmu kbir tiegħi”.

Il-klima ekonomika fl-2010 ma tantx kienet sabiħa. “Ma ninsewx f’liema stat prekarju kienet tinsab l-industrija,” qal is-Sur Chetcuti. “Id-dinja inħakmet mill-kriżi finanzjarja u qalulna biex niddiversifikaw għax l-industrija tal-kostruzzjoni u s-suq tal-proprjetà kienu fgati u ma kienx hemm spazju għal iktar progress. Però aħna ma’ qtajniex qalbna.

“Qbilna li konna fuq vapur f’nofs dik it-tempesta. Il-55 membru fundatur oriġinali tal-assoċjazzjoni ingħaqadna u jkomplu jagħtu l-appoġġ tagħhom sa’ llum, u rnexxielna b’għaqal kbir indaħħlu l-vapur fil-port.”

Wara dak il-vjaġġ mimli tumbati bl-inkwiet kollu li ffaċċjaw, is-sitwazzjoni llum hi kompletament differenti. “Mill-ġdid nistgħu nieħdu vantaġġ tas-suq li issa qaleb għall-aħjar fl-industrija tal-proprjetà,” qal is-Sur Chetcuti, “għal kull min qiegħed jaħdem tajjeb, jiżviluppa b’mod sostenibbli u jsegwi r-regolamenti u d-direttivi li qegħdin jiġu mposti fuqna mill-Unjoni Ewropeja.”

Iżda s-Sur Chetcuti kellu kliem ta’ twissija: “Ma nieħdux l-affarijiet for granted. Inżommu saqajna mal-art. Il-ħsara issir malajr iżda tissewwa bil-mod. L-assoċjazzjoni tagħna illum tgawdi mir-rispett taż-żewġ partiti kbar ewlenin fil-pajjiż li huma strumentali biex titwassal il-politika li tmexxi l-ekonomija ’l quddiem. Jekk l-industrija tagħna titlef ir-rankatura, kollox jieqaf.”

Il-President tal-MDA temm b’appell lill-membri żgħażagħ tal-assoċjazzjoni – li issa għandha iktar minn 300 membru – biex jiġu ’l quddiem u jagħtu l-kontribut tagħhom fil-kumitat. Aċċenna li wasal iż-żmien biex iwarrab: “Inħoss li wasalna u kbirna, u nħoss li dalwaqt jasal iż-żmien meta nieħu pożizzjoni inqas prominenti.

“Hija xi ħaġa tal-għaġeb li tagħti kontribut fuq skala nazzjonali. Tgħallimna kif nillobijaw u ninnegozjaw mal-gvern. Mingħajr ma nkun partiġġjan, għandi nammetti li din l-amministrazzjoni għarfet b’mod ċar il-ħtieġa u l-importanza tal-industrija tal-kostruzzjoni.

“Xi drabi qbilna, xi drabi ma qbilniex, iżda ħafna mill-proposti tal-MDA ġew aċċettati Budget wara Budget, biex illum bil-grazzja t’Alla n-negozju hu b’saħħtu u nemmnu li fil-ħames snin li ġejjin ser ikompli jkun pożittiv,” temm jgħid is-Sur Chetcuti.
